Galt is the oldest and largest of Cambridge's three towns, and its housing tells you that. The streets running up from the river on both sides, around the downtown core, Dickson Park and Soper Park, are lined with brick houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s: solid, handsome, and full of the small repairs that come from a century of slow movement. Galt also has a lot of long-time owners along the river and near the parks who are not climbing ladders any more, and grab bars, railings and a second handrail on the basement stairs are as common a call as anything. If the house is designated or sits in a heritage district, exterior changes may need the City of Cambridge involved first; interior small repairs almost never do. Older houses here can still have some knob-and-tube wiring and galvanized plumbing, and anything on that side goes to a licensed electrician or plumber, which you will hear before it is priced.
