Handyman Costs in Cambridge (2026)
Planning ranges for handyman work in Cambridge, Ontario in 2026, and a plain account of what makes a small job cost more or less. These are planning figures, not a price list. Every job is priced in writing from your list before the work starts.
Handyman pricing is simpler than renovation pricing, and it is also where people get surprised. The surprise usually comes from one of three things: a call-out fee for a ten-minute job, a job that looked small and was not, or an hourly rate with no end in sight. The way to avoid all three is to send the whole list, get a written price for it, and know before the visit which items are handyman work and which belong to a licensed trade.
How handyman work is priced
- By the list. You send the list, you get one price. Best for a clear set of jobs with photos.
- By the half-day or day. A block of time to get through as much of a longer or vaguer list as possible. Best for the fridge list that has been growing for a year.
- By the hour. Used when the job cannot be scoped in advance, such as chasing a draft or freeing painted-shut windows one at a time. There is always a stated minimum and an estimate of hours.

These figures are for planning in 2026. They are not binding, and a real price comes after the list has been read and, where it matters, the house has been seen.
What pushes a Cambridge handyman price up
The age of the house. A door in a Galt century home takes longer than a door in a 2015 build in north Hespeler, because the frame has racked, the screws have nothing to bite and nothing is square. Plaster is slower than drywall. Old trim has to be matched. This is not padding; it is the time the job takes.
Seized and corroded parts. Shut-off valves that will not close, rusted fasteners, painted-over screws. A faucet swap becomes a valve replacement first.
Access. Ladder work on a two-storey exterior, a tight crawlspace, a shelf in a stairwell, a rack on a high garage ceiling. Anything that needs a second person for safety.
Materials. A faucet can cost less than the labour or several times more. Slat wall, overhead racks and closet systems have wide ranges. You choose the part and you see the price.
Masonry. Mounting anything on Galt brick or a block basement wall means masonry drilling and anchors, which takes longer than studs.
Drying time. Drywall compound, plaster and some caulks need time between coats. A patch that has to be invisible is two short visits, not one.
What brings the price down
Sending the whole list at once. One visit, one set-up, one drive. Ten small jobs in a day block cost far less than ten separate calls.
Photos and measurements up front. The right parts arrive on the first visit instead of the second.
Buying stock parts. A standard-footprint vanity, a standard rough-in toilet, a common faucet. Special-order parts add time and risk.
Being clear about the finish you want. A patch that will be painted by you and does not need to be perfect is quicker than a patch that has to disappear in a hallway with a window at the end.
Flexible timing. A visit that can be slotted into a gap costs less to schedule than one that has to happen Saturday at nine.
What is not on this list, and why
You will not see electrical work, gas work or behind-the-wall plumbing priced here, because a handyman does not do them. Wiring, switches, receptacles and circuits are done for hire only by a licensed electrical contractor, with Electrical Safety Authority notification where required. Gas is a TSSA-licensed gas fitter. Re-piping, drain stacks and water heaters are a licensed plumber. Roofing and full renovations are their own trades. If your list includes any of those, they are named as such in the written price, with the rest of the list priced normally.
How to compare handyman quotes
- Is the price in writing, item by item? A number over the phone with no list is not a quote.
- Is there a stated minimum, and is it clear?
- Are materials separate, and do you choose them?
- Does the quote say which items are being referred to a licensed trade? A quote that prices a new circuit as handyman work is a warning sign, not a bargain.
- Proof of liability insurance and WSIB coverage. Ask everyone, including us.
- Is payment on completion of the work rather than in advance? Small jobs should not need a large deposit.
